Christmas postcard - Vienna St. Stephen's Cathedral
In the center of the cosmopolitan city of Vienna is the impressive St. Stephen's Cathedral, affectionately known by the Viennese as "Steffl". Today St. Stephen's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral. Its history began in 1365 as a "Dom church", in 1469 it became a cathedral and since 1723 it is a metropolitan church of the archbishop. The south tower houses the carillon, which includes 13 bells. The most important one is the "Pummerin", it is only rung on special occasions. Noteworthy is the roof of the Vienna Cathedral. Patterns and coats of arms are worked in with different colored roof tiles, altogether there are 230.000 roof tiles. The old town of Vienna with St. Stephen's Cathedral and Schönbrunn Palace have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
