The Old Bridge with the medieval bridge gate and the Heidelberg Castle are the landmarks of the city of Heidelberg. The Old Bridge was built in the 18th century. Next to the bridge gate squats the bridge monkey, which is quite curious. Heidelberg has a love stone below the Nepomuk Terrace, where lovers seal their togetherness with a lock on it. The Heidelberg Castle is the epitome of German Romanticism and towers over the city. For 5 centuries the Elector Palatine resided here.
Today, the ruins of the castle attract millions of tourists every year. With beeing founded in 1386, the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg is the oldest university in Germany.
