With over 1300 years of history, Würzburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany. Situated on both sides of the Main, Würzburg offers a wealth of sights and monuments such as the Old Main Bridge, Marienberg Fortress and the Käppele, the Falkenhaus, the Old Crane, St Kilian's Cathedral, the Bürgerspital zum Heiligen Geist and the Würzburg Residenz. A special destination is the famous baroque pilgrimage church Käppele on the hill next to the Marienberg fortress - built by Baltasar Neumann. The Würzburg Residence was also built according to plans by Baltasar Neumann. In 1981, the Würzburg Residence with the Court Garden was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.
Würzburg's Julius Maximilian University is the oldest in Bavaria. Its history dates back to 1402. One of Würzburg's most famous citizens was Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen. His original laboratory can be seen in the Röntgen Memorial. With so much city history, it is difficult to decide on the right motif for an Advent calendar. The view across the Main to Marienberg Fortress and the Old Main Bridge naturally offers some artistic freedom. The Christmas market is located in Würzburg's old town.
